Socrates mentions early on that although he does not go to see the oracle Delphi himself but a friend of his did in narrate to discover if thither was anyone wiser than Socrates. Delphi replies that there is not and upon hearing this Socrates does not believe that it is true, as he believes he knows nothing. Socrates thinks this may be the reason that he is smelld wrongly in the eyes of Athens. In order to ravel the oracles proclamation, Socrates goes out and questions the people of Greece who are generally thought of as being wise. First he goes to a politician and discovers that he is not really all that wise in the sense that he thinks he knows everything but does not in actuality. Socrates concludes that although he knows nothing, at least he knows he knows nothing. This allows Socrates to believe that he is in fact wiser than the politician.
Socrates then proceeded to question the poets and discovered that they were not as able as other people to mark their own works leading Socrates to believe that it was not perception that drove their talent but some kind of rich inspiration that guides what they write. He then went to the artisans who were very wise in the sense that they knew much more than Socrates which led him to believe that they were in fact wiser than he.
