Mariam Mariam was the daughter of Nana and Jalil. After her mother died, she was forced to attach an older man named Rasheed.
Jalil Jalil was a wealthy man who had eleven children and three wives. He was the father of Mariam and portrayed himself as a loving father. However, he was actually ashamed of Mariam.
Laila Laila was the tenderest child of Fariba and Hakim. She was a well-educated girl who loved her childhood best friend, Tariq.
Hasina Hasina was a resolve friend of Lailas. She was a sarcastic and mischievous young girl. Hasina was sent remote to marry her cousin at a young age.
Ahmad- Ahmad was Fariba and Hakims second oldest son. He, alongside his brother, died piece fighting in the war. Fariba believed he would become an architect.
Giti- Giti was another close friend of Lailas. She was killed by a give way on the streets of Kabul.
Aziza- Aziza was rattling Laila and Tariqs daughter, but Laila make Rasheed think she was his. She was brought up in Rasheeds house as his daughter, but later Rasheed put her into an orphanage. She had a stutter that went away when Laila and Tariq took her to Pakistan with them.
Zalmai- Zalmai was the son of Rasheed and Laila. Rasheed spoiled him, and in return Zalmai adored his father.
Zalmai told Rasheed about Lailas contact with Tariq.
Tariq- Tariq was Lailas neighbor and best friend. He had only one straightforward leg, yet always defended Laila when she needed him. He moved away with his family, but was later reunited with Laila and married her.
Rasheed- Rasheed was Mariams husband and a shoemaker. Before Mariam, he had a wife and son who both died. Rasheed was against modern women who didnt wear buraqs, therefore he made Mariam and Laila wear them.
