Glenny's purpose in writing the book was to run into out more intimately the history of the Balkans himself. As a British journalist covering the 1990 struggles in Yugoslavia, he cognise he was ignorant of Balkan history, and in order to understand the war he was covering, he needed to know more about the Balkans. Chapter sextet covers "the royal dictatorships" of the region dealing with the Greek refugee situation, violence in Bulgaria, the political conflicts of Yugoslavia, Albania, and Romania (the section on Romania reading like an chronological sequence of TV's Access Hollywood).
