Introduction base on the information related to Cardiff I will be examining the city and its residents and visitors, in general terms and I will in like manner look at how the city regards the identities of place, along with relational and unmarked identities, that are both obvious and abstruse or negatively valued. I will place myself as a prospective visitor to Cardiff to look at how it regards me and the ways in which I am meant to interpret this information and how I am expected to react in relation to this and how I will react. Please note that there may be near omissions because of lack of available evidence in some instances. Cardiff obviously sees itself as a progressive thriving economically viable and attractive place for the prospective visitor and offers a positive identity of itself, but is there more to be gleaned outside of what the discourse contains?

To examine this question more we should root look more closely at the people who delay there firstly in a historical context, compare urban with rustic, and the various identities contained therein. Historically most cities have been colonize by people in search of employment who came from rural areas and were absorbed into an urban environment from about 1800 (Making Social Lives, Chapter 5, knave 210) onwards, and cities subsequently encroached on rural areas to accommodate growing populations and also commercial interests. Cities would have been very different then, noisy, dismal places with comminuted social interaction and with bad hygiene, plumbing and housing conditions, defilement and overcrowding aligned with labour intensive heavy industries like char mining and steel.
