Significance
The significance of the study was clearly identified. All look into to date focuses on large urban hospitals and teaching medical centers, thus leaving questions regarding nurses perceptions of electronic documentation in a rural setting. The research addressed this gap in literature.

In the literature review, it was revealed that while several studies have addressed the bug out of EHR implementation in the hospital setting, none focused on this aspect in a rural setting. A search of PubMed and the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) from 1995 to 2008 revealed no studies that have specifically looked at adoption of EHR systems in a nonurban setting (Whittaker et al.

Theoretical Base
This study used enjoin content analysis and the Staggers and Park (1993) Nurse-Computer Interaction modelling as the basis for investigating nurses perceptions of barriers and facilitators to EHR implementation. According to Hsieh & Shannon (2005), enjoin content analysis may use an existing possible action to provide a framework for data collection and analysis (as cited by Whittaker et al., 2009, p. 294).
